Hello. My name is Jack Gargan. I'm from Cedar Key and I'm a man on a mission. That mission is to take our country back from career politicians who are beholden to big business and special interests. I am announcing my candidacy for U.S. Congress in the 5th Congressional District of Florida as an Independent candidate who is fiscally conservative and centrist in outlook. As many of you know, I have devoted most of the last 12 years of my life as a fulltime, unpaid volunteer in the cause of better government. The record shows that my efforts have had a positive impact on both state and national affairs. My THRO campaign of the early 1990s (Throw The Hypocritical Rascals Out) called for elimination of deficit spending and term limits for elected officials. It was hailed by political analysts as THE catalyst that started the modern reform movement in this country. I am also honored to be called, "The father of the term limits movement." Sadly, after much success in reining in the national debt and establishing term limits across the nation, we have once again become complacent and it's back to "politics as usual," dumping billions more debt on our children, raiding the Social Security Trust Fund and pandering to big business and special interests to finance congressional election campaigns. In this district the Democrat and Republican candidates are talking about raising more than a million dollars EACH to run their campaigns! Now, I ask you; where is that money coming from? Their own financial reports reveal it is NOT coming from average citizens. The vast majority of contributions come from big business and special interests. Even more troubling, when it comes time to vote on a crucial bill - perhaps the bill to provide much-needed relief on the cost of prescription medication for our senior citizens - who do you think they will be listening to? You, the voter who put them in office? Or the big pharmaceutical companies who helped finance their campaigns? I do not now, nor have I ever accepted money from any PAC, corporation or special interest group. I do not seek endorsement by any association or group because I have found that most endorsements come with strings attached. Any endorsement I receive will come absolutely unsolicited with nothing promised in return. In politics, if you can't attack the message, you attack the messenger. You will hear them say that a vote for me is a wasted vote, or that I am a "spoiler" taking votes from one candidate to throw the election to the other. Funny, both sides will charge me with that, when past performance shows I draw equally well from Democrats and Republicans. I have to remind them that NOBODY "owns" votes. You have to EARN them! Besides, there are over 71,000 registered voters in this district who are neither Democrats OR Republicans. If they just come out and vote, they alone could win this election for me - and for us! Consider this; when I ran for this seat in 1998 I received the highest vote count of any third party candidate in the USA since 1948. If I get exactly the same percent of the vote this time around and the Democrat and Republican split even, I WIN! And now that Alachua County is out of the district, the prospects of a win are even brighter. They will say that even if I win, just one person can not be very effective. Don't you believe it! With the razor-thin balance of power in Congress, a huge number of bills will be decided by one vote - MINE! Look at the fix present congressional action has put us in: Social Security is still going broke. The only disagreement is WHEN? Deficit spending has topped $100 billion so far this year while billions in pork barrel projects lie untouched. The national debt is now over six TRILLION dollars! That's the equivalent of more than $6,000 from every family in the country every year just to pay the interest! Congress (our representative voted "yes") just passed a bill to extend welfare benefits to aliens and dump the cost on our children. Because of my favorable name recognition and past political accomplishments, I have been identified as perhaps the only independent or third party candidate in the country who has a chance of pulling an upset. The whole nation will be watching Florida's District 5 on election night. It is now squarely up to you. Have we finally wised up to the fact that the Democrat/Republican duopoly is firmly in the back pocket of big business and special interests? Politicians give lip service to important issues but vote the way their campaign contributors dictate. SEND A MESSAGE! LET FLORIDA DISTRICTS LEAD THE NATION TO BREAK THE CORPORATE/SPECIAL INTEREST STRANGLE-HOLD ON OUR CONGRESS. IT'S TOO LATE FOR US, BUT DO THIS FOR YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. HAVE THE COURAGE TO SAY "NO MORE" TO REPUBLICAN CORPORATE WELFARE AND DEMOCRAT SPECIAL INTERESTS. VOTE FOR INDEPENDENT JACK GARGAN ON NOVEMBER 5th! Oh, yes, while I am at the age where God does the term limiting, I still pledge to serve no more than six years, then go home and live under the laws I helped pass. Paid political advertisement, Jack Gargan for Congress, Bess Watson Treasurer. Independent candidate with no party affiliation. |
